Building Thermal Analysis covers the major field of heat transfer in building design. To use this file you will need Mathcad 8 or higher. If you do not have Mathcad, you may still view the sample file.

Building Thermal Analysis, written by Professor Andreas Athienitis of the Centre for Building Studies at Concordia University, covers the major field of heat transfer in building design. It can be used as a tool for self-study, an aid for college course work, and an on-line design assistant for engineers and architects. It is a compendium of relevant, real-life examples stressing the theoretical, whilst never losing sight of the practical engineering aspects. Common design problems in building thermal design are solved, such as:

  • sizing of a window overhang for summer shading
  • determining thermal comfort used on air temperature, wind and humidity
  • computation of heat and solar radiation transfer through various media.

Because it uses Mathcad, every number and formula is live so you can change parameters and plots and watch Mathcad calculate answers right there in the book.

The documents in this electronic book are filled with worked examples. Often a user will want to change constants to more accurately model their own problem. For this reason an appendix of material properties listing thermal conductivity, density, specific heat, U factor, and emissivity for a number of substances and building materials is included.
